Abstract

The purpose of the study was to explore the factors that have an impact on greening archives at municipalities in South Africa. This article draws on a literature review to identify the factors that have an impact on the greening of archives and conducts a content analysis of the municipalities’ activities. This is a literature review article and it is limited to South African municipalities. The study found that there is a lack of political will and leadership support to implement green archives in South African municipalities. It was also found that municipalities are not allocating resources to train and raise awareness on greening archives. Finally, there is still a lack of monitoring and evaluation of greening archives. This study provides insights into the role of municipal leadership and stakeholders when developing and implementing the greening of archives. It further outlines the significance of municipalities in allocating resources to implement the greening of archives.
